When I was young, my hero was Wonder Woman. I watched the TV series with Linda Carter religiously and wanted to grow up to BE Wonder Woman. Anything seems possible when you are 5!
As I got older, after the series ended, my grandmother was my gentle reminder of who she believed I could be and would send me little note cards with cut out pictures of Wonder Woman from old Tv Guides and magazines.
Now that I am a mom of a 6 yr old little girl, I see the how important Girl Power heroes are with instilling strength, purpose, and a sense of right vs. wrong.
Even though I may not be able to give her a Lasso of Truth to compel others to be honest, I can help her to speak her own truth which brings forth TRUE strength of mind, character, and integrity.
Tiara’s in the 21st century may now be made of plastic and useless as a weapons against our enemies. Taking time to learn, use her brain and project reason, empathy, and compassion will be a far better way to outwit those who may put her down and try to take away her own power of Self.
If the prospect of living in a world where trying to respect the basic rights of those around you—and valuing each other simply because we exist—are such daunting, impossible tasks that only a super-hero born of royalty can address them… then what sort of world are we left with? She came to instill a sense of purpose in all of us and to recognize our own inner ability to help the world with our own gifts. Isn’t that what all of us want our children to learn? In a world filled with super heroes who may have unrealistic capabilities, how can we teach our children to look deep inside, find their own super hero-ness, and inspire others to do the same?
A new journey to be started. A new promise to be fulfilled. A new page to be written. Go forth unto this waiting world with pen in hand, all you young scribes, the open book awaits. Be creative. Be adventurous. Be original. And above all else, be young. For youth is your greatest weapon, your greatest tool. Use it wisely. ~Wonder Woman
